Joanna and Chris Johnson's impactful journey with Humane Colorado began 16 years ago. Originally from Indiana, the couple and their beloved dog, Olive, long had their eyes and hearts set on Colorado. Soon after establishing roots in Denver, Joanna was on the search to find a foster friend for their gentle-natured Olive and quickly connected with Humane Colorado.

"Olive had the best temperament; she welcomed anyone into our home, making them feel comfortable," Joanna recalls. The Johnsons' initial participation with Humane Colorado's fostering program revealed a level of professionalism that deeply impressed them. "The mandatory training classes, home safety checks, and continuous support showed us how well-run and effective the organization was," Joanna adds.

Since their introduction to Humane Colorado's foster program, their relationship with Humane Colorado has blossomed into a profound partnership, marked by a deep commitment to animal welfare.

Over the years, Chris and Joanna's involvement and engagement grew, culminating with the decision to include a bequest for Humane Colorado in their Will. This decision wasn't made lightly but was a testament to the simplicity and accessibility of the process. "Our relationship evolved to a point where we saw Humane Colorado not just as a charity, but as a trusted partner," Chris explains. "The ease of making a bequest, combined with our deep belief in the mission, made it a natural choice for us to include them in our estate plans." Joanna added, "The process was surprisingly simple. Humane Colorado provided us with sample bequest language, and all we had to do was share it with our attorney. It was that easy."

The Johnsons know their planned gift will support Humane Colorado's ongoing initiatives, particularly those that extend beyond immediate animal care to broader community services. "We don't have children, so our legacy is about making a meaningful impact through organizations that align with our values," says Joanna. Chris adds, "It's about ensuring that Humane Colorado continues to provide exceptional care and advocacy for animals and their families."

For Chris and Joanna, planned giving is more than just a financial decision — it's a statement of trust and a reflection of their values. "Don't be surprised if it changes your life," Chris smiles. "You become part of a local community that values compassion and proactive care."

In the hopes of encouraging others to leave a legacy gift to Humane Colorado, Joanna and Chris shared three compelling reasons that influenced their own decision. First, by making such a gift, you become an integral part of a community that shares a deep commitment to animal welfare. "It's not just about contributing financially; it's about joining a network of people who share your values, where you can forge lasting friendships and find great emotional satisfaction," Chris explains.

Second, the Johnsons believe that there is no other organization that provides as much value for contributions as Humane Colorado. "Your support goes directly to helping animals and supporting community services that make a significant impact throughout Colorado," Joanna notes, emphasizing the efficiency and effectiveness of Humane Colorado in utilizing donations.

Lastly, unlike many shelters, Humane Colorado is not a municipal shelter, which makes planned gifts especially crucial. "Your legacy gift ensures that Humane Colorado can continue its vital work. It's about providing necessary support that allows the organization to thrive without relying heavily on tax dollars," they share. Being a nonprofit shelter means that every dollar contributed through planned giving is fundamental to Humane Colorado's operations and overall success.

Chris and Joanna's story is a powerful testament to the impact of thoughtful, long-term support for Humane Colorado. Their legacy is not just in the funds they will one day leave behind, but in their ongoing advocacy and participation that continue to enrich their community. Joanna and Chris hope their story encourages others to consider the long-term impact they can make beyond their lifetime.
